2017 was another great year for live music in Colorado (and elsewhere). My final count came to 215 performances, at 65 shows and 3 festivals, in 11 cities scattered across 6 states and 3 countries. I got to see Jason Isbell perform on the beach in Mexico on my 40th birthday. I saw Julien Baker perform a solo set at the Chicago Theatre immediately after my wife told me we were (very unexpectedly) expecting, and again (with my pregnant wife) a few months later in an underground club in Madrid. I sweat my ass off by the pool while Pelican destroyed the outside stage at Psycho Las Vegas, only to head inside to get my face smashed in by Neurosis. Not only did I get to see Björk, Frank Ocean, and Nine Inch Nails perform back-to-back-to-back nights over single weekend in L.A., I met an group of awesome people in process. I managed to hit 24 Red Rocks shows while dealing with selling and buying a new home, and also managed to hit a few smaller shows downtown in between packing and unpacking. I saw Tom Petty perform for the last time…and gathered in Nashville with Dolly Parton and other friends of Kenny Rogers to say farewell to a legend.
Bucket list checks included: Aimee Mann, A Perfect Circle, At The Drive-In, Blondie, Bob Mould, Frank Ocean, Guns N’ Roses, Janet Jacket, The Jesus & Mary Chain, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Missy Elliott, Pat Benater, Paul Simon, PJ Harvey, Slowdive, Steely Dan…and I still have Misfits at the Forum on the 30th.
It was another amazing year of live music and I was extremely fortune to be able to attend so many shows. Here’s to all the touring musicians that make our lives so much better! I am grateful for everything you do.
