Class of 2012: The Performers

I’m fairly certain I attended my final show of 2012 last night.  It was a year of over 200 acts at over 50 shows and 5 festivals in 3 countries and 6 states — and it all comes down to these 15 most memorable moments. *

Alabama Shakes
Fox Theatre, Boulder, CO
Brittany Howard’s incredible voice. up close and personal.

Craig Finn
Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO
a storyteller session with The Hold Steady frontman.

SXSW 2012
03.14.12 – 03.17.12
Austin, TX
not all fun and games, but Danny Brown, Pallbearer, Chelsea Wolfe, Deafheaven and Man’s Gin killed it.

Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO
stepping into the world of Neige.  via performance and interview.

Willis Earl Beal
Fox Theatre, Boulder, CO
standing front row as Willis Earl Beal stole the unsuspecting crowd from the headliners.

Bon Iver
Red Rocks, Morrison, CO
didn’t think his sound could fill Red Rocks.  was so, so wrong!

Witch Mountain
Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO
devastating doom meets Heart.  criminally small crowd for this epic show.

07.14.12 / 07.16.12
A Club, Spokane, WA / Zebra Lounge, Bozeman, MT
roadtrip to follow my favorite extreme metal band.  Agalloch were worth every mile.

Florence + the Machine
Red Rocks, Morrison, CO
almost as spiritual as the venue itself. this show was especially moving.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Red Rocks, Morrison, CO
this show was the shocker of the year. literally changed the way I feel about his music.

Jack White
Isdajo Automotive, Denver, CO /Red Rocks, Morrison, CO
witnessing a legend perform at an automotive garage.  witnessing a legend perform at a legendary venue.

Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra
Gothic Theatre, Englewood, CO
love her or hate her, this was like nothing I’ve ever seen before.  amazing evening.

Gothic Theatre, Englewood, CO
an absolutely brutal assault to the senses. in the most gorgeous of ways.

Kendrick Lamar
Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO
proving why they passed the torch. Kendrick put on a rare ‘near-perfect’ hip-hop show.

Fun Fun Fun Fest
11.02.12 – 11.04.12
Auditorium Shores, Austin, TX
Run–D.M.C., Refused, Lagwagon, Napalm Death.  it was fun x 3.

* Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band @ Pepsi Center on 11.19.12 was probably the best shows I went to this year, but watching it from a corporate suite took some of the thrill out of the experience.
