Class of 2011: The Performers

It was a year of over 200 acts at over 80 shows and 6 festivals in 6 states — and it all comes down to these 20 most memorable moments.  These are ILSUDH2’s Favorite Live Music Experiences of 2011.

Oracle Arena, Oakland, CA
seeing the Purple One for the first time

Chelsea Wolfe
02.26.11 / 07.20.11
Cafe du Nord / Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco, CA
first interview for blog.  great opening sets.  How To Dress Well & Liturgy were both worth seeing as well.

Drive-By Truckers
03.18.11 / 03.19.11
Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO
dozens of times and these shows never get old.

James Blake
Doug Fir Lounge, Portland, OR
spending the last night on Earth with the future.

Sleigh Bells
Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO
45 minutes of intense bliss

Wise Blood
The Independent, San Francisco, CA
an in-your-face, opening set from an unexpected character.

Red Rocks 2011 Season
06.13.11 – 09.05.11
Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO
what started out as a weak season, ended up being a short, but full season. Peter Gabriel, Stevie Nicks, My Morning Jacket, Soundgarden, The Avett Brothers and Jamey Johnson stand out as surprising highlights.

Okkervil River / Titus Andronicus / Julianna Barwick
Bluebird Theater, Denver, CO
probably the strongest single-show line-up all year. very possibly the best show of the year.

Blast-O-Mat, Denver, CO
claustrophobic blackgaze while locked in a garage has never been so good.

Dark Castle / YOB
Larimer Lounge, Denver, CO
not even technical difficulties could ruin this insanely loud show at the Lounge.

11th Annual UMS
07.22.11 – 07.23.11
Various Venues, Broadway, Denver, CO
didn’t get to spend a whole weekend, but UMS beat out Westword’s fest for the first time this year.  Snake Rattle Rattle Snake, Sage Francis, Old Canes, Alone at 3am, Tin Horn Prayer and Houses were highlights.

Rhinocerpolis, Denver, CO
these kids are pure punk rock.  25 minutes of pure punk rock.

Suburban Home Records Sweet 16 Anniversary Weekend
09.09.11 – 09.11.11
3 Kings Tavern, Denver, CO
hands down the best weekend of music Denver had to offer this year.  thanks again to Virgil and the acts for an incredible couple nights.

TV On The Radio / Broken Social Scene
Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO
the end of Broken Social Scene and a new beginning for TV on the Radio.  what a night!

Wolves In The Throne Room
Glob, Denver, CO
like witnessing an ancient underground ceremony, the atmosphere was as important as the music in creating one the most memorable nights of the year.

Frank Turner / Andrew Jackson Jihad
The Marquis Theater, Denver, CO
one of those rare nights when you get so much more than you expected.  great sets from both artists.

Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO
this was not the metal show some expected, but that does not mean it was not one of the best performances this year.

Fun Fun Fun fest 2011
11.04.11 – 11.06.11
Audtitorium Shores, Austin, TX
still the best fest around, FFF got bigger and better this year.  highlights included Slayer, Odd Future, Henry Rollins, Grimes, Okkervil River, The Joy Formidable, Girls, Deafheaven, Lykke Li, M83, Active Child, Death Grips, Thee Oh Sees, and the list could go on and on.

Lykke Li
Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO
hot, hot, hot!  the music was amazing as well.

Future Islands
Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco, CA
a painfully inspired performance from Sam and crew.  met even the most unreasonable of expectations.
