Shonna Says Goodbye to Drive-By Truckers

After spending eight years as the sole female member of Drive-By Truckers, Shonna Tucker has decided to go her own way.  Serving as the bands bassist since Earl Hicks left after Decoration Day, Tucker took over the third singer-songwriter duties when Jason Isbell left in 2007 due to various reasons, chief among them his dissolution of marriage to TuckerIsbell, the constant tweeter that he is, instantly responded to inquiries about him joining forces with Hood and Cooley with the humorous ‘no, I’m a terrible bass player‘.

Tucker‘s songwriting contributions, and pretty much everything Drive-By Truckers have accomplished since the untouchable trilogy (Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, The Dirty South) have settled differently among critics and fans.  I actually found Tucker‘s contributions refreshing, but I will admit that Go-Go Boots will be the first DBT album that will fail to make my Top 25 of the year.

Some will see this as a positive thing — the shake-up DBT needs to start a new chapter — hopefully that will be true, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling a tinge of sadness right now.  Like when Isbell left, I feel like I just lost a part of an extended family.  She will be missed on albums to come, and more importantly, at the Rock Shows!

Shonna’s statement:

Hello friends,

Unfortunately, I come to you all with some sad news.

It’s time for me to move on to the next great thing, whatever that may be.

I want to thank each and everyone of you, with my whole heart for your overwhelming kindness and support over the years. You are the greatest fans in the world! You really do amaze and inspire me. I can’t express how much you all mean to me. Your rock solid encouragement has carried me through, many nights. I have been so lucky to have had the chance to meet and talk with so many of you. Your stories and passion are so incredibly inspirational to me.

I am, without a doubt, not done. I will have a website up and running very soon so that we can keep in touch. I have a whole lot left to say and do, and I can’t wait to hear what all of you are up to. This is very difficult, so I’ll leave you with this… for now…

Thank you all so much!

Safe travels and Happy Holidays to you all!

See you soon somewhere…

All my love,
Shonna
