‘something that I thought I could never give away’

40 Watt Sun – The Inside Room
(Metal Blade, 2011)

Doom metal love ballads?  I don’t know if they really exist, but Patrick Walker and his latest doom trio, 40 Watt Sun, do their best to make them so.  Don’t get me wrong, this is a traditional doom album with slabs upon slabs of slow motion guitar solidifying a wall of sound around its subject, but Walker‘s vocals make the prospect of actually scaling the wall and catching a glimpse of the sun shining on the other side a reality.  This follow-up to Warning‘s Watching From A Distance has been out for months now, but it resonates so much better this time of year, when the changing of the leaves on the trees bring not only the promise of frozen earth, ice covered roads and early evening darkness, but also the promise of Spring just over the horizon.
