‘dopesick, tongue tied, blood-letting blues’

Trophy Scars – Never Born, Never Dead
(Independent, 2011)

Trophy ScarsMessengers

To be honest, I had never heard of Trophy Scars before I came across Never Born, Never Dead.   A Jersey band that started out as a post-hardcore live act, evidently transformed themselves in a blues experiment of sorts.  The six songs presented here bring to mind a young Tom Waits that had grown up listening to Fat Wreck Chords releases.  Sometimes the vocals can be overwhelming, but the punk/bluesy baseline and the detailed storytelling blend it all together into something very attractive.  The 28 minutes of music on this EP might be out of my comfort zone, but I am willing to suffer a little uncomfort for this band — from what I’ve heard so far, a little pain will go a long way with Trophy Scars.
