Robyn has been in the game for awhile now. She won her first Grammi (the Swedish equivalent of a Grammy) when she was 20 years old. That was in 1999. It took some 10 years after that for her to gain the fame and following she deserves here in the United States. She broke through to the American public only after breaking free from the shackles of mainstream pop. Robyn took everything you’d expect from a platinum blonde Swedish pop star and turned it inside out. Don’t Fucking Tell Me What to Do was her message to the world and it was a message that rang far and wide. Robyn first captured my attention with the single With Every Heartbeat and I have to admit I was a little embarrassed to be listening to it. But I knew back then that there was something different about her, something that set her apart from all the prepackaged prima donnas on the radio. It’s nice to see her get the recognition she deserves.
You can now view a 1hr. documentary on where Robyn came from, who she is and what drives her. Thanks to TwentFourBit for bringing these videos to my attention.
