Last year I gave up my seat on a flight from Seattle to Denver in exchange for a free ticket on Alaska Airlines. It was a business trip and I was in no hurry to get anywhere, so I figured ‘what the hell?’. That voucher has been sitting in my desk gathering dust ever since. There are limited places you can go on Alaska Airlines and since I flew to the PacNW on the company periodically, there was never any reason to use the ticket. Well, I don’t cover the Northwest for work anymore and I’ve always wanted to see a show (or a festival) at The Gorge, so Sasquatch 2011 might provide the reason I need to cash in my voucher.
There seems to be negative responses to the line-up this year, but aside from a few lackluster headliners (sorry people, Modest Mouse suck live and I have seen Foo Fighters and Death Cab enough), I think the line-up is pretty tight. First off, you’ve got Wolf Parade performing for one of the last times before their indefinite hiatus, the newly reunited Death from Above 1979, Das Racist, Twin Shadow, Black Mountain, The Antlers (because arn’t they at every festival?), The Radio Dept., Gayngs, Surfer Blood, Best Coast, Archers of Loaf, the always amazing Major Lazer, Sleigh Bells, Deerhunter, Local Natives, Sharon Jones, Yeasayer, Beach House, Robyn, Cold War Kids, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Bright Eyes and two artists that have put out the best albums of 2011 so far, The Decemberists and Iron & Wine. And The Flaming Lips performing The Soft Bulletin in it’s entirety? I’d say this is worth the trip.
No SXSW this year due to an SE Asia trip. No Pitchfork Music Festival because of the heat factor. And no Outside Lands because it sucks. Sasquatch might be my festival this year.
