Jay Reatard’s legacy lives on a year after his death… (and for many years to follow)

This guest post comes from Mike Scarola from New York.  Mike sends out a weekly (or monthly) e-mails that resemble the distribution list ILSUDH2 sent out before creating this blog. This post was inspired by seeing Wavves perform with Jay Reatard’s band.

Discovering new bands never gets old for me. It takes me back to being a kid, when I would look at liner notes of albums to see who the band thanked, toured with, etc. If a band I liked rocked a t-shirt of another band in a photo or covered a song, I had to check it out. That process led me to discover a lot of bands. Back in the 80’s, when I was all about metal, I got into punk bands like the Misfits and the Sex Pistols cause Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica were into those bands.

The internet has made this process much easier. So when I got into the band Wavves recently, I found out that the new band was the backing band for Jay Reatard. While I had heard of Jay Reatard, cause there was a lot of buzz around him, I hadn’t listened to any of his stuff. So, off to Google I went. What I found first was that he died in January last year. So much for me having my ear to the ground. I browsed a lot of videos and became an instant fan of his music. Jay (real name Jimmy Lee Lindsey) recorded a lot of music in his short life (died at 29). He recorded with 2 other bands, The Retards and the Lost Sounds, by the time he had this solo project. He may have died young but he left a large musical legacy.

So, here is It Ain’t Gonna Save Me off of his last album, Watch Me Fall.  My original intent for these posts was to write about what I’ve been listening to recently. Well, I’ve been completely immersed in this guys music all week. Too bad I wont be able to see him live, cause I’ve become a big fan. Hope you become one too.
