Class of 2010: The Soundtrack

A list of songs is always a personal thing.  No two people will ever create the same mixtape or playlist.  That being said, ILSUDH2 listened to over 9,000 tracks in 2010 so you didn’t have to.  Those thousands of tracks have been narrowed down to a personal Top 40*.  You won’t like everything here, but you’re sure to find something you do.

#40. Die Antwoord – Enter The Ninja

#39. Gayngs ft. Har Mar Superstar – One More Try (George Michael cover)

#38. DJ Shadow – I’ve Been Trying

#37. Family Of The Year – Summer Girl

#36. Salem – King Night

#35. Sleigh Bells – Rill Rill

#34. The Hold Steady – The Weekenders

#33. Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Bright Lit Blue Skies

#32. Twin Shadow – Castles In The Snow

#31. Zola Jesus – Night

#30. Roky Erickson w/Okkervil River – True Love Cast Out All Evil

#29. Drive-By Truckers – The Fourth Night Of My Drinking

#28. Avi Buffalo – What’s In It For?

#27. BRAHMS – Brought It Out

#26. Deer Tick – Christ Jesus

#25. B.o.B ft. Eminem & Hayley Williams – Airplanes, Part II

#24. Curren$y – The Hangover

#23. Broken Social Scene – Texico Bitches

#22. Cults – Go Outside

#21 – Suckers – Black Sheep

#20. Frightened Rabbit – Swim Until You Can’t See Land

#19. Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man

#18. The Black Keys – Tighten Up

#17. Javi Garcia & The Cold Cold Ground – Blame Me

#16. Jamey Johnson – That’s How I Don’t Love You

#15. Das Racist w/Chairlift – Fashion Party

#14. Kid Cudi, Best Coast and Rostam – All Summer

#13. Nathaniel Rateliff – Early Spring Till

#12. Arcade Fire – We Used To Wait

#11. Sufjan Stevens – I Walked

#10. Active Child – When Your Love Is Safe

Not only is the instrumentation reminiscent of the 80’s, the lyrics bring you back to those Jr. High years; the years when you coveted something so deeply, only to discard it as soon as you possessed it.

#9. Roadside Graves – Liv Tyler

I’m not sure if this song has anything to do with Stephen Tyler‘s daughter, but the lyrics ‘if we didn’t have to worry about money, we’d be alright’ hit home for most of us who are not dating famous actresses this year.

#8. Janelle Monáe ft. Big Boi – Tightrope

The debut single from the new Queen of R&B features Big Boi and was the first dance track to get me moving this year.  It was a toss up whether to include this or Cold War in the Top 10…but Tightrope won out of sheer exposure.

#7. How To Dress Well – I Wish (R. Kelly cover)

Tom Krell’s tribute to his best friend who died this year, this just might be the most heartbreaking song of the year.  It was released to the world as a youtube video of the one and only performance.

#6. Eminem ft. Rihanna – Love The Way You Lie

Em came back with a vengeance this year and nothing solidified this more than his domestic abuse anthem with Rihanna.

#5. Lissie – Pursuit Of Happiness (Kid Cudi cover)

Lissie knows how to perform live and sometimes that doesn’t translate in her recorded work, but this cover of Kid Cudi‘s Pursuit Of Happiness should make everyone a believer.

#4. The National – Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks

When I first heard High Violet, this was not my favorite song.  It fact it might have been one of my least favorites.  But after seeing them perform it acapella at the Fillmore earlier this year, it grabbed a hold and won’t let go.  This is my new About Today.

#3. Robyn – Dancing On My Own

How Robyn isn’t as big as Gaga, Rihanna or any of these other R&B stars is beyond me.  She had an amazing year with her Body Talk series and her live performance at Pitchfork was a highlight of the year.  Dancing On My Own might be her best single yet.

#2. Kanye West – Runaway

Seeing this song performed on the VMAs was an amazing moment in a show that has lacked amazing moments for well over a decade.  Say what you will about Kanye, but never say he isn’t self aware.  Here’s a toast to you, douchebag!

#1. Cee Lo Green – Fuck You

OK, so maybe it’s not the best song of the year, but those that make a huge impression rarely are.  This song was not only the song of the summer, it will be the most memorable song of the year.  And if you don’t like it, well you know what the song says!
