I have a mixed relationship with Josh Ritter‘s take on indie folk. Technically I should really like him. He’s a talented songwriter, he tells elaborate stories with original lyrics and he does so over an alt-country/indie folk instrumentation. Being a big fan of Will Oldham, The Tallest Man on Earth, Avett Brothers, Deer Tick (this list could go on forever), I never understood why I couldn’t get into Animal Years when it came out. But then The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter came out in 2007 and I was a big fan. Unfortunately I am disheartened with his latest release, So Runs the World Away. But at least this time, I don’t seem to be the only one.
The good news is that Daytrotter has posted a new Session with Josh Ritter and it blows away the new album. The 6 song session contains striped down versions of a couple So Runs songs with a song each from Animal, Historical, Golden Age as well as an unreleased track. Do yourself a favor…skip the new album and just download this Session!
