jj – jj n° 3

It seems the critics are starting to turn on these indie darlings now that they have revealed who they are.  Well, maybe not turned, but they don’t seem as impressed anymore.

We can now put faces to the music instead of just blood splattered marijuana leafs…Joakim Benon and Elin Kastlander from Gothenburg, Sweden are the duo who make up jj.  Both of whom were in Austin this past week for SXSW.  Unfortunately I did not get to catch any of their sets, but I was looking forward to hearing about the splash they made there.  Unfortunately I have not heard anything about that either.

But enough about what everyone else thinks.  I loved jj n°2 and I love jj n°3.  I like that the mystery surrounding this band is gone and I am still enjoying the music.  Does jj n°3 live up to jj n°2?  Maybe not.  But I could listen to Elin sing the phonebook and be happy.  Her voice is heaven.  And it’s found it’s perfect home whispering over Balearic beats or covering Lil’ Wayne over hip-hop beats.

You have to think of these jj albums as simple collections of songs.  Usually by the time the album has come out, you’ve already heard most of them quite a few times.  I think that’s why I like them…they feed my ADD very well.  The simplicity is key here, but simple does not mean boring.  In fact, I think this is one of the most exciting indie pop bands out there right now.
