Derailed: Dark Tranquillity – We Are The Void

Every so often I will be posting under the ‘Derailed’ heading. This is for posts that are outside my normal comfort area…indie rock/pop.

Probably beginning to sound like a broken record here, but I am no expert in the metal genre.  I am the last person you should be listening to about modern metal.  That being said, I am hooked on Dark Tranquillity!

If you do know anything about metal, you will know these guys are from Gothenburg, Sweden and perform a version of melodic death metal known as The Gothenburg Sound.  They have been around since 1989 and four of the current six members have been around since then.  That’s saying quite a lot in a genre where bands are touring with lineups that are lucky to have one original member.

For the past couple months I have been listening to the seven or so studio albums these guys have put out.  From their critically acclaimed masterpiece, The Gallery, with it’s bone-crushing first song, Punish My Heaven, to all the output in the past decade.  And if there is one thing I can say about these Swedes it’s that they are consistent.  I truly believe they have not released a bad album.  Sure, you could say all the albums sound a lot alike, but that’s fine by me.  If Metallica or Iron Maiden would have just kept doing what they did best maybe we would have been spared the Load, Re-Load or Blaze Bayley years.

The new album, We Are The Void, continues the logical progression of this band.  It’s melodic, has keyboards and industrial elements, has the grit and growl of death metal but it relatively accessible.  It’s death metal for grown ups.  It’s a damn good album by a damn good band that has been doing this for a long damn time.
