Derailed: High On Fire – Snakes For The Divine

Every so often I will be posting under the ‘Derailed’ heading. This is for posts that are outside my normal comfort area…indie rock/pop.

As I have mentioned before, I am getting back into metal.  I’ve been away for some time.  But now that I’m back I have devoted most of my time to playing catch-up…that is until now.  High On Fire‘s new album, Snakes for the Divine, is the first release to rattle my eardrums since my newfound interest in this heavy genre.

High on Fire have been around for awhile.  This sludgey, stoner metal band from Oakland released 4 albums from 2000-2009.  I have to admit that I had only heard 2007’s Death Is This Communion before Snakes for the Divine and at that time I wasn’t impressed.  Gonna go back to that one though, because I think now that I’ve tuned my ears to this new age of metal, it’s gonna sound a lot different.

Snakes has been highly anticipated to say the least.  Even within my circle of new metalhead friends, there have been at least 20 emails strands about it.  We got faked out for a minute by an old Sleep release that someone posted under the false title of Snakes, but now that we have the real thing, it lives up to all expectations.

Today was a very bad day in an already bad week.  I am sick, I have some major issues with my house, I am fighting with companies and contractors and still trying to work and get the day-to-day done.  At one moment today, when I had the choice of putting my fist through a wall, burning my house down or getting in my car and driving until I out ran all my problems…I instead put on some High On Fire and let the heavy, crushing riffs and Matt Pike‘s angry voice drown out all my sorrows.

This is heavy music.  Very heavy.  When listening to it in headphones you’re almost afraid it will crush your skull.  And today I kinda hoped it would!

Can’t wait to see these guys live!
