R.I.P Jay Reatard

Jay Reatard died in his sleep last night.  He was 29 years old. No word on the cause yet.

I was not a huge fan of Jay, but I did appreciate what he was doing…bringing back gritty, fuzzy, crunchy garage rock like nobody else had done in awhile.  He released a warehouse worth of 7″, singles and EPs before getting discovered in the blogosphere and blowing up to the point of insanity.  From 2006 – 2008 you could not go to a music site, blog or message board without hearing something about a new Reatard release or a recent insane show (or feud with Brooklyn-bands).

Like I said, I never got into his recordings, but his latest release, Watch Me Fall, caught my attention and I was looking forward to seeing him live if he ever came around. It’s just music that I think would sound better in a live setting.  Preferably in a dark, dirty, grimy venue.  But I guess that will never happen.

Pretty sad when anyone dies so young, but especially someone who was so talented in the eyes of so many.
