Decade:Zero – Explosions in the Sky

I am not going to do a Best of Decade list. I am going to post bands and albums that defined the past 10 years under the heading Decade:Zero.  These will be posted throughout the year and decided by using random on itunes and posting when I come across something worth posting.

Funny that my favorite Explosions in the Sky album, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone, should come on while I was browsing through Thailand photos that I received from some San Francisco friends who just got back.  I was feeling nostalgic for San Francisco and my life and friends there and even more nostalgic for Thailand.  It’s been over a year since I lived in the city and it’s been almost 4 years since I spent so much time in my favorite place on Earth, SE Asia.  All of a sudden I was missing a lot.

Explosions in the Sky are a 4-piece band from Austin, TX (one of my other favorite places) and they play a form of post-rock that takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions.  Their songs start out very minimal and then build and build into an explosive wall of sound…then they bring you back down and set you safely on the ground.  You are shaken up, but in a good way.  And when you think the ride is over, they shoot you right back up into the sky and you’re flying again.

EITS are the first purely instrumental band I have had the patience to enjoy.  I need lyrics, I need a story, I need my music to tell me something.  But EITS do tell a story, or at least they set the soundtrack to the story their music kick starts in your head.  Where it takes you is up to you.

These guys put out a lot material in the past decade and it’s all worth checking out.  All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone is their masterpiece, but The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place and Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever are both worth your time.  And if they ever come  to your city, go see them!  The adventure is that much more spectacular live!
