Derailed: Rihanna – Rated R

Every so often I will be posting under the ‘Derailed’ heading. This is for posts that are outside my normal comfort area…indie rock/pop.

If you know me, you know I have some guilty pleasures.  They are usually of the pop-punk, 80s hair metal or female R&B flavors.  You can guess which one this is.  I first noticed Rihanna the same way most of you guys out there did; by thinking, damn, she’s HOT!  But I took it a step further than any heterosexual male should and actually got into her music.  In my defense, she does have  great voice, she’s got range, hooks, melody and producers who put in all together and wrap in up in a  tight package.

I drove my friends insane with Umbrella (some of them to the point of real insanity where they actually started to like her too!).  I even made my girlfriend (wife now) drive with me to Sacramento from San Francisco to see her with Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D. Then my 5 year old daughter started to get into her and I actually got sick of the Good Girl Gone Bad album as well, because it’s all she wanted to hear every time she got in the car.  This was all before this young diva was beat down by Chris Brown on my birthday last year.

Now she’s released her new album and I was actually excited (for my daughter, ya, for her, you know,  she’s 7 now…and I’ll keep telling myself that).  But now that I have heard the album I won’t let my child anywhere near it!  When did Rihanna become “so hard“?!!!  She’s dropping f-bombs, she’s talking about suicide, talking about cappin’ fools and being a G4L…gangsta for life!  On the first listen I really thought it was a joke.  But it’s not.  She’s trying on a new image.  The good girl is completely gone now and the bad is all that is left.

That being said, she’s still HOT!  And I’m actually not hating most of these songs.  So that should do it for any credibility I had with my readers.  I’ll understand if you go back to Pitchfork or Stereogum or Metal Reviews or even MTV for your news.  (but look at that picture one more time…just sayin’)
